Weird Adventure Wednesday: On a Monday!

On A Cool Evening you are approached by a licentious apprentice at a roadside inn.  The apprentice discloses to you that three months travel to the east, in The Silvered Archipelago of Doom is hidden The Rotten Altar of Woeful Tempests.  It is told that there is hidden The Sanctified Hate Lens of the Dreadful Acolyte.  But beware, for the apprentice warns you that  The Searing Flesh Fiend of Vulgarity inhabits that place!

Weird Adventure Wednesday (Now with more stuff)!

On A Brisk Afternoon you are stopped by a young adventurer in the slums.  The adventurer tells you a forgotten tale that nine days ride to the northeast, across The Loathsome Ravine of the Stargazer can be found The Crumbling Village of the Vile Veterans.  It is whispered that there can be found The Iron Sword of the Fateful Dictator. The adventurer tells you that an acolyte will pay a small fortune to those who can retrieve that Sword. But beware, for the adventurer admonishes you that  The Unholy Troubadour of Visions enslaves all who come near!

I added the possibility that someone may be willing to pay you to undertake the adventure. I figured that there needed to be some incentive to go after these horrible items. ;-)

Too busy to post, almost.  So here is a new table of Items of Terror and Wonder (the "wonder" is  about who would actually try to use most these things, I think).

Weird Adventure Wednesday: With a free magic item!

On a steamy day you are hailed by a foppish jongleur loitering in a bustling inn.  The jongleur tells you an interesting tale that two months travel to the northeast, across The Relentless Ocean of the Unburied Gods was built The Emasculating Zoo of Astonishing Mockery.  It is said that there is hidden The Terrifying Iron Spyglass of Illusions.  But beware, for the jongleur admonishes you that it is alleged The Wayward Surgeon of Shrieking Mystery tortures all who go there!

Item: The Terrifying Iron Spyglass of Illusions
     This iron telescope is covered in a pattern of 5-60 (5d12) small raised skulls.  The telescope is approximately two feet in length when fully extended allows the user to cast an illusion that will frighten creatures anywhere within the line of sight provided by the telescope.  When all of the skulls are gone, the spyglass vanishes in a puff of purple smoke.  Casting the spell is accomplished by pressing one of the raised skulls which then disappears.  The user has no control over how the actual illusion manifests, and there is a 2% chance every time the telescope is used that it will backfire and affect the user and his or her friends.

In Dungeon Crawl Classics mechanics, this would have the effect of both Phantasm and Scare simultaneously as if cast by a 7th level Wizard.

In Labyrinth Lord mechanics, this would have the effect of both Phantasmal Force and Fear simultaneously as if cast by a 7th level Magic User and a 6th level Cleric respectively.

In Swords & Wizardry mechanics, this would have the effect of both Phantasmal Force and Scare simultaneously as if cast by a 7th level Magic User.

Weird Adventure Idea:

On a bracing day you encounter a graceful adventurer dressed in a fancy cloak along the road.  The adventurer offers to walk with you for a ways and weaves a tale for you as you travel.  The adventurer says that four weeks journey to the northeast, within The Crevice of Flesh Eating stands The Dripping Cairn of Forgotten Despairs.  It is thought that hidden within the cairn is The Execrable Amethyst Lantern of Barbarity.  The adventurer tells you that a sorcerer seeks this lantern and will pay 1000 gold coins for it!  But beware, for the adventurer warns you that The Fiendish Serpent Men of Flaying enslave all who dare enter that place!

This week's weird adventure idea:

On a cloudy evening you are greeted by a swaggering but obese bravo in a busy tavern.  The bravo tells you that 7 days journey to the northeast, within The Profane Crater of Demented Sleep can be found The Forbidden Tentacle Tunnels of Eternal Slaughter.  It is reputed that there can be found The Skull-adorned Chaos Flute of Blood.  The bravo informs you that he knows of a buyer who will pay 7,500 gold coins for that enchanted item.  But beware, for the bravo warns you that The Enchanted Skull of Perversion is said to guard that place!

On a wintry day you are confronted by a down on his luck swordsman near an ancient shrine.  The swordsman tells you a rumor that 4 weeks ride to the east, Beneath The Ruined City of the Final Oracle lay The Labyrinthine Sewers of Tainted Dreams.  Rumors say that there is hidden The Destructive Vanadium Stabbing Sword of Emasculation.  The Swordsman tells you that he knows a buyer who will pay 10,000 gold coins for that sword.  But beware, for the swordsman warns you that The Radiant Pain Maiden of Harm feasts upon those that dare enter those sewers!

On an autumn evening you have a chance meeting with a sallow magus in a whorehouse.  The magus discloses to you that 14 days travel to the northwest, beneath The Misty Forest of Ordeals were dug The Stinking Tunnels of the Shaved Mystic.  It is alleged that there is hidden The Tentacle Well of Dismemberment.  But beware, for the magus counsels you that it is believed The Tremendous Occultist of Emasculation makes its abode there!

In honor of Free RPG Day, I'm reposting a link to my free 1,001 More Weird and Wacky Adventure Ideas, a collection of adventure seeds that are in many cases just plain weird.  I figure that not everyone has access to somewhere that is participating in Free RPG Day, and those folks should't miss out on getting something free, even if it is kind of crappy. :-)
