Miniatures Monday

Today, in the final Miniatures Monday of 2012, we see a mysterious wandering wizard.  Is he perhaps more than he seems?

Well, I posted 51 completed miniatures in 2012.  The only day that I skipped was Christmas Eve.  Not too shabby, but I doubt that I'll be able to keep up that level of productivity in 2013, but who knows?

We named the dog Indiana...

The University of Chicago received a rather interesting package the other day addressed to Henry Walton Jones Jr..

I never get stuff like this in the mail.  Maybe I should change my name to Pennsylvania. :-)

From the Earth to the Moon

Forty years ago, as I at the age of three, eagerly looked forward to the arrival of Santa Claus, man left the moon for what has so far been the last time.  Gene Cernan left with these words:

"I'm on the surface; and, as I take man's last step from the surface, back home for some time to come — but we believe not too long into the future — I'd like to just [say] what I believe history will record. That America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow. And, as we leave the Moon at Taurus-Littrow, we leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return: with peace and hope for all mankind. Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17."

I was born into a spacefaring nation.  Children born today cannot say that.

Miniatures Monday

In honor of the release, later this week, of Peter Jackson's version of The Hobbit, I decided to paint one of my very old hobbit miniatures.  This very Bilbo-like thief came from Grenadier Miniatures "Halflings" boxed set.  Purchased in 1981, that set was the second set of miniatures I ever owned, the first being Grenadier's "Dwarves".   Back then, it was tough to find gaming miniatures near where I lived, and I bought any ones that I could find/afford.  Grenadier was a big player in those days, as they had the official line of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons miniatures.  My, but what a long time ago that was!

Just visiting...Seriously.

My account happened to still be active, so I decided to log in for a bit just to see what was up in World of Warcraft.  As in the past, they had changed things to the point where I couldn't figure out how to even play for a while.  I eventually got the hang of it though.  I still don't plant to stay long term, but it's fun to look around.

Beware my son

So this weekend, I finally finished assembling my Jabberwocky miniature.  It was way more time consuming than I'd hoped, but I'm pretty pleased with the results.  Now to prime it and paint it...
Does anyone have any colour suggestions?

My dirty little secret of gaming

There are a lot of games on the market, many of which I've owned and played.  There are also many that I've owned and never played.  For the most part, this is because the game seemed neat, but either wasn't really my style, or I just couldn't find enough people to play it.  But there are a couple of games out there that I have owned, never played, am pretty certain I never will play, but every so often I com back to them to re-read them and wish that I played them.  It's no secret that I'm a huge miniatures fan, so perhaps it makes sense that my dirty little secret would be Games Workshops Warhammer Fantasy Battles and Warhammer 40K.  I own the rules, I own enough miniatures to field three armies, one 40K army and two Fantasy Battles armies in various stages of assembly.  So I am a closet Warhammer fan, I've watched the game being played and it seems like it would be fun, but I'm not sure that it would really be my thing to play.  Building the miniatures and setting up the terrain though?  I'm all over that!  So, does anyone else have a dirty little secret of gaming?  Something that they wished they played but for some reason just don't?
Here we see my plague marines being lead into battle by Typhus the Traveller for the glory of Nurgle.

Phantasm Friday

So, it's October, which mean Halloween is near, and for me, Halloween has always been about horror movies.  This month, I have decided to revisit Don Coscarelli's Phantasm series.  I'll be watching a different one each Friday, starting tonight with the best of the four, the original Phantasm.

I'm not going to bother reviewing it.  It doesn't make much sense, and maybe that's why I like it so much.  Zombie space dwarves, an ice cream truck, a 1971 Barracuda, and of course Angus Scrimm as The Tall Man.

Solomon Kane

I have to say, I really enjoyed the Solomon Kane film.  It was much better than I would have ever expected, especially considering it was made in 2009 and is only just now getting a U.S. release for some unknown reason.

Brak is Back!

Four of John Jakes' "Brak the Barbarian" adventures are back in print.  Well, in electronic print that is.  Brak the Barbarian / Mark of the Demons and Witch of the Four Winds / When Idols Walked are available through Amazon for the Kindle.  They are not great literature, but I'm always glad when sword and sorcery stories come back into print.

RIP Romanadvoratrelundar

I only just learned that actress Mary Tamm, died on Thursday at the age of 62.   She had an extensive career spanning movies, television, and stage, but I will always remember her as the first incarnation of Tom Baker's Time Lady companion Romana in Doctor Who.
